Bug Effect

The past two days I’ve taken some time to pick up Mass Effect. I’ve played through it (the main campaign, not much side missions) and I just wanted to share what I thought about it.

Foundry

I’ve been receiving a couple of very nice parcels the last few days. :)

A shiny Foundry BigIron 4000 switch/router (it does all sorts of fun stuff like BGP4 and VRRP ^^), which currently has a single RPS3 power supply (550W) and a B8GM management blade, which has 8 gigabit fiber ports. I’m planning to get it in a flightcase at the end of the month (it’ll be carried around a fair bit, and these things are way too expensive to throw around unprotected), and of course there’ll be more blades and a second power supply coming some time as well. The plan for now is to load it with two power supplies (redundant; if one fails, the other still has enough juice to power the whole system), two additional B8G blades and a B24E, making for a total of 24 gigabit fiber and 24 10/100 copper ports. The only real downside on these units is that they’re quite heavy (especially when fully loaded) and that they produce a lot of noise. You could probably use the fans to dry your hands if you wanted to.

I’ve been playing with it (of course), and its management system is a thing to get used to. It’s either the command-line interface (which takes time to learn all the commands and stuff like that), or the web interface (which is not much more than clicking commands instead of typing, requires some things to be set up in the command-line anyway).

Naturally I have some pictures online (and more may be added at any time).

Banking issues

October 6, 2008 · Posted in Blog · Comment

This is fucking unbelievable. There has been a lot of controversy around the ABN Amro bank lately, which is where my ‘main’ bank account is. Naturally, I use internet banking to do most of the stuff I need to do (the only remaining stuff would be physical deposits/withdrawals and paying for stuff at a store). If internet banking is online at all, that is.

They seem to make a habit out of maintenance every night. Of course someone like me definately understands the need for some maintenance every now and then, but 00:00 - 07:00, pretty much every day, is a bit much if you ask me. Today the notice that maintenance was being done and you should check back around 07:00 was there all day. Worse even, a few minutes ago I wanted to log in, but got a page that due to an outage it is not available.

It is fucking internet banking. Out of all web services that are out there, the one that should NEVER be offline for non-maintenance reasons, is internet banking (especially at a large bank like this one). I want to be able to access my money, and I want to be able to every fucking minute of every fucking day.

I’m seriously starting to consider going to a different bank.
