New stuff

Here’s a picture of what recently arrived here:

That’s right, I now have 3 Samsung 19″ widescreens instead of just 1 :) I still need to get creative with videocards to actually use the 3rd (it’s not even connected for the picture), but since it’s been getting harder and harder to find this type of monitor recently I decided to just get both now. As you can see this setup spans most of my <2m wide desk, but it’s a major improvement to the previous setup, which was one of these guys and an old CRT to act as 2nd screen. That CRT was taking up a LOT of space on my desk, which I now have free for other stuff.

Here’s a (slightly bad) pic of the currently used two screens in action:

The wallpaper comes from Digital Blasphemy. I got a membership last weekend; it’s only $ 15 and worth every penny of it. If you’re looking for a huge supply of really awesome wallpapers, including over 100 dual- and triplescreen wallpapers, this site is the place to go. The second taskbar, the different wallpaper images per screen, and various other extremely useful things are possible thanks to UltraMon, which is pretty much the ultimate tool for multi-screen setups.

I’m also expecting to get a UPS soon (a second-hand APC Smart-UPS 1500, black version, rackmount of course). It’ll be without batteries, but I can either spend a small amount on a unit without batteries and get replacements (making the whole thing as good as new) or spend much more on a unit with batteries, only to spend more on replacements a month later because the ones that came with it are in poor condition. I’m mainly getting it to keep my PC going at places such as CampZone (and I need a 1500VA because a UPS with a lower rating will simply be overloaded with a setup like mine). I’m also looking for a second 1000VA (or larger) unit for my servers and networking equipment.

On a less positive note, I had to reinstall my PC. Some important files in the filesystem of the main partition got corrupted somehow, resulting in a blue screen (0×00000024) when booting no matter what you try. Thanks to the Ultimate Boot CD 4 Windows, I safely salvaged every last bit of data out of the partition and reinstalled Windows. It was sort of needed anyway, but the fact that it took me most of the day and following night sort of explains why I don’t like doing it.
